Klimt's Chickens
What happened to Klimt's chickens?
As a teenager I did not have a poster on my wall of Madonna or Wham or Michael Jackson. I had a lush decorated poster of 'the Kiss' by Gustav Kimt. Later on I went to Vienna and saw the real deal. What struck me first, seeing the painting, was the format. It turned out to be an almost square painting! For obvious reasons my poster was a 3 : 4 format. It took me a few minutes to come to terms with this, accepting the real painting AND realising what a monstrous error (in my eyes) the poster company made.
Klimt drew inspiration from the garden at his studio. In 1916 he painted "Garden path with chickens". A garden with an abundance of flowers, patterns and colours. At the end of the garden path he painted 3 dark chickens (can you spot the third in his original ?) What ever happened to these chickens? For this illustration I used scraper board. A black coating on white chalk. the coating is removed with a sharp object or a small knife. Creating an inverse illustration.
